Asrani Dies At 84: Anupam Kher To Adnan Sami, Film Fraternity Mourns Demise Of Veteran Actor

Anupam Kher has mourned the loss of legendary actor-comedian Asrani, who passed away aged 84 on Monday. The veteran actor remembered him as a large-hearted person who brought immense laughter and joy to the world

through his work. Anupam took to Instagram, where he shared a video of himself talking about Asrani, whose real name was Govardhan Asrani.

For the caption, he wrote: “Dearest #AsraniJi! Thank you for making the world a better place to be in with your persona!! On and off screen! We will miss you in physical form! But cinema and your ability to make people laugh will keep you alive for years to come! Om Shanti!”

Sharing his personal memories of the late star, Anupam shared he was deeply saddened by the news of Asrani’s passing.“A while ago, I got to know that Mr. Asrani is leaving, and I was very saddened. I was very saddened because last week, I had a conversation with him. He came to my acting school and wanted to take a class, a master class. And he was travelling; he was saying that he was shooting. Was he in Surat or where was he?”Reminiscing about Asrani’s warmth, he shared: “A lot of people usually know him as a great comic actor, but maybe a lot of people don't know that Mr. Asrani was a teacher at FTII, the Film and Television Institute of India, and he has been the teacher of a lot of great artists." Adnan Sami too paid a tribute to the veteran actor and wrote, "I am so saddened to learn about the passing of our dearest legend Asrani ji. A man who was a genius of his craft & an artistic treasure. Although people will always remember him for his incredible comedy but he was a man of all seasons & styles. His dramatic roles were equally brilliant. But alas, his “Angraizon Ke Zamaanay Ke Jailor” from the Epic ‘Sholay’ will be remembered forever!"

RIP Asrani

Further, he added, "I had the honour of working & spending time with him when I requested him to appear in my music video of ‘Lift Karade’ & I too wanted him to reenact his legendary ’Jailor’ character for which he generously agreed. He was so committed that he made sure that every aspect of his getup was from the original makers of the Sholay Movie- i.e The Wig, Moustache & Uniform. His enthusiasm and passion for his work was an example for us all to learn from. He was a thorough gentleman. He was full of love & grace."Madhur Bhandarkar took to X and wrote, "Saddened by the passing of the legendary actor Asrani ji. His remarkable contributions to Indian cinema, especially in comic acting, have left a lasting impact. For decades, he brought countless memorable characters to life, earning a cherished place in the hearts of audiences. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family and admirers. #OmShanti."

Asrani passed away due to a chest infection, at 3 PM on October 20, as per his manager. His last rites were performed at Santacruz Crematorium on Monday.
