Genie, Make A Wish Ending Explained: Kim Woo-Bin, Bae Suzy Fight Death For Happy Ending; Do They Erase Uncontrollably Fond Trauma?

When Genie, Make a Wish premiered on Netflix on October 3, all hearts were beating to see whether or not Kim Woo-bin and Bae Suzy would rectify the trauma they left behind with Uncontrollably Fond (2016).

So, to expect a happy ending from their new fantasy K-drama wasn't unusual. Did it deliver in its much-awaited finale?

Genie, Make A Wish finale

After realising his past life connection with Ki Ka-young, Genie/Iblis gets to know what happened in his missing 20 years of memories. He met and fell in love with a grown-up Ka-young who's living an impoverished life, yet a righteous one. She dreams of returning to her homeland, Goryeo (Korea), but falls prey to a selfish man's wish and Iblis, unknowingly grants it to him without realisingg it is her. Begging a human to ask for her life as a wish, he fails and sees Ka-young die in his hands.

With renewed memories and a deeper love for present-day Ka-young, Iblis now takes it upon himself to avenge her killing in past life. In the meantime, Shadi's son Khalid kidnaps presend day Ka-young, her (younger) grandmother Lee Mi-jo (Oh Pan-geum) and friend Min-ji. Mi-jo dies to save Min-ji as Khalid continues his quest to become master of Iblis' lamp.

The big battle of Iblis, Ejllael and Khalid

Iblis, on his side, fights his brother Ejllael, angel of death, by cutting off his wings. He then kills the flower, leading to the death of Khalid. But, then he vanishes, leaving Ki-young distraught in the pain of losing her grandmother and the love of her life. She takes off to Dubai with her one last wish. She calls Iblis, who appears and grants her the wish amid of lot of tears. She asks him to grant her all the emotions her grandmother, best friend, people around her and even Iblis felt towards her, for one day. Iblis hrants it and bows in front of Ki-young, and as per the rule, he gets beheaded by Ejllael. She feels the actual pain, loneliness and heartbreak they all went through during their time with her. The sorrow gets into her and she dies.

Genie and Jinniya

After some time, when Min-ji is at the memorial of both Pan-geum and her friend, Ki-young appears leaving her startled. Turns out that after spending a 1000 years of agony towards her love, Ki-young has turned into a Jinniya (female of Genie) and is there to grant her friend 3 wishes. After recalling memories of growing up in her house with her grandmother, Ki-young is drinking away her sorrow when Iblis appears and kisses her.

We get to know that after death, Mi-jo (Pan-geum) refused to go to heaven despite God's order. She was adamant with her demand of asking God and Ejllael to send Iblis back to Ki-young so that the two of them could live a long and happy life.It was the grandmother who emerged as the real hero, ensuring the reuniting of Iblis and Ki-young as Genie and Jinniya, giving a happy ending to the show after a lot of tears.
