
Harjit Kaur, deported from the US last month after living there for three decades, has finally addressed the confusion surrounding her real name. Some documents had identified her as Harjit, while others as Sarabjit."My name, as per birth records and other papers, is Sarabjit," she clarified, while speaking to TOI. "Some family members also call me Harjit. Not everyone calls me by Harjit, but some do. It is not a big deal. Even my ‘bharjai' (brother's wife) has different names in her parents' house and in-laws' house."As per the TOI report, official documents confirm her claim. A certificate from the additional district registrar (births and deaths) of Tarn Taran district lists her name as Sarabjit and her date of birth as Jan 5, 1952.Her marriage
certificate - issued 20 years after her 1972 marriage - however, names her as Harjit Kaur and records her marriage to the late Sukhwinder Singh on Feb 13, 1972, in Pangota. She hit back saying she she did not have a daughter but a niece."This is all false. Ask anyone (I knew) in America. I lived and worked there for 30 years. Falsehood is being spread and I cannot stop people from doing that. Who all shall I fight? I don't care. But, they should not spread such falsehood," she said. "I don't have any daughter but, yes, I took care of my sister's daughter in terms of bearing the expenses of her education. I did not legally adopt her for that. She is a dentist in Australia. She doesn't live in the US. In fact, I have not met her since I moved to America. I am in touch with her by phone, though. Today, too, she called me on the phone," she added.Since her deportation, Harjit stayed at her sister’s home in Mohali before returning to her parental village, Pangota, where she now resides with her brother Kulwant Singh and his family.
