Pankaj Dheer, who shot to fame as Karna in BR Chopra’s iconic television show, Mahabharat, died at the age of 68. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, state reports. CINTAA confirmed that the funeral
will be held later today in Mumbai. Dheer had been working in the entertainment industry since 1981 and had an illustrious career across mediums, like television and films.

Pankaj, a famous name across generations, left behind a legacy that will be taken forward by his son, actor Nikitin Dheer. The veteran actor had seen the industry closely since childhood as his father, C.L. Acting career
Born in Punjab on November 9, 1956, Dheer witnessed the industry since childhood. The decision to become an actor wouldn’t have been difficult. He started his acting career in 1981 with Poonam. Though the film did not perform at the box office, he struggled to find a breakthrough project until BR Chopra’s Mahabharat happened in 1988. His performance as Karna in the historic television show made him an overnight sensation. Mahabharat’s success cemented him as a household name and also made filmmakers notice him.
Mahabharat success
Following the success of Mahabharat, Dheer went on to do films and shows including Sanam Bewafa, Sadak, Zee Horror Show, Chandrakanta, Soldier, Baadshah, Andaaz, Sasural Simar Ka, Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat, Devon Ke Dev...Mahadev and Badho Bahu. Pankaj’s last show was Dhruv Tara – Samay Sadi Se Pare. Prior to that, he acted in Ajooni. Being a thorough professional, he kept working without his fans learning about cancer. He was diagnosed a while ago. Reportedly, he had recovered before cancer relapsed. It took a toll on him and as per reports, he was extremely unwell in his final days.

In a statement, CINTAA wrote, “With profound grief and deep sorrow, we inform you of the passing away of our Trust’s erstwhile Chairman and CINTAA’s former Hon. General Secretary, Shri Pankaj Dheer ji, on 15th October 2025. The cremation will be held today at 4:30 p.m Next to Pawan Hans, Vile Parle(W) Mumbai.” Pankaj is survived by his wife Anita, son Nikitin Dheer, daughter-in-law Kratika Sengar (actress) and granddaughter Devika.
