Garg’s manager, Siddharth Sarma, and the organiser of the North East India Festival in Singapore, Shyamkanu Mahanta, were arrested for questioning in the Assamese singer’s tragic death due to alleged drowning in Singapore on September 19. Previously, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma demanded their statements be recorded before October 6. According to the latest development in the probe, Sarma and Mahanta have been taken into custody.

Manager, festival organiser arrested

As per PTI’s report, Shyamkanu was arrested on his arrival at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi from Singapore, while Siddharth was nabbed from an apartment in Gurugram. According to the agency, a senior police officer confirmed that they were taken to Guwahati early on Wednesday morning.

In September, the Assam government had constituted a 10-member SIT, led by Special DGP M P Gupta, to investigate Zubeen’s death at the age of 52. The SIT issued notices to several people, including Mahanta, Sarma and members of the Singapore Assam Association and those who had gone to Singapore for the festival to appear before it and record their statements.On September 25, the SIT and Assam CID teams conducted raids at their houses. Several items, including a pendrive, a hard disk, a computer CPU and documents were seized. Zubeen’s colleague-musician Sekhar Jyoti Goswami’s home was also inspected.Zubeen's wife, Garima Saikia, his sister, Palme Borthakur and his uncle, Manoj Kumar Borthakur, filed a complaint with Assam CID in the last week of September. In a statement to PTI, Zubeen’s uncle, Manoj, said, "We want a thorough probe into the circumstances of his death.” A senior police officer further informed, "We have received a complaint from Garg's family and are examining it."Zubeen died on September 19 and was cremated in Kamarkuchi village on September 23 with full state honours. According to the first post-mortem, he died of drowning while swimming in Singapore during a yacht party.
