Assam Police Form 10-Member SIT To Probe 'Suspicious' Demise Of Zubeen Garg
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to probe the "suspicious" and "tragic" demise of Assam's cultural icon Zubeen Garg. According to Assam DGP Harmeet Singh, the SIT will be headed
by Special DGP M.P. Gupta. The SIT has been formed at the orders of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma."As directed by the Hon'ble CM Dr. @himantabiswa Sir, a Special Investigation Team led by Shri M.P Gupta, Spl DGP @AssamCid has been constituted to ensure a transparent & time-bound investigation into the suspicious & tragic demise of Zubeen Garg," the DGP posted on X.One of the SIT members was later removed as the officer was already the Head of another SIT related to the Nagaon PS Case, said the DGP.In a post shared on X, DGP Assam said, "Kindly refer to the constitution of an SIT to investigate the suspicious & tragic demise of Zubeen Garg. The SIT has been reconstituted, as one of the nominated Officers is already Head of another SIT related to Nagaon PS Case 503/25 u/s 61(2)/318(4)/316(2) BNS - constituted vide CB/NGN/Order/2025/610-A dated 29/8/2025; so she cannot be spared to come to Guwahati."

Zubeen Garg passes away
Zubeen Garg's untimely demise at 52 left the nation in shock. The Assamese singer passed away on September 19 in an unfortunate accident in Singapore. He was cremated on September 23. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma was also present at the funeral. Following the singer's death, more than 50 first information reports (FIRs) were lodged across Assam against Northeast India Festival (NEIF) organiser Syamkanu Mahanta, Garg's manager Siddharth Sharma, Guwahati-based media owner Sanjiv Narain, and Sekhar Jyoti Goswami, a close associate of Mahanta. Garg was to take part in the North East Festival, organised by Mahanta in Singapore on September 20.Sarma mentioned that Zubeen's death certificate listed the cause of death as "drowning." While addressing the media, as reported by ANI, he said, "The Singapore High Commission sent the death certificate of Zubeen Garg, and they mentioned the cause of death is drowning. But this is not a post-mortem report. The post-mortem report is different, and the death certificate is different. We will send the documents to CID. The Chief Secretary of the Assam Government is contacting the Singapore Ambassador to get the post-mortem report as soon as possible."
