
Japan is under the grasp of a severe influenza outbreak that has been taking the country by the swing weeks before the typical flu season. As of mid-October 2025, there are more than 4,000 people who have been hospitalised and over 100 childcare centres and schools have been temporarily shut down to contain the spread. The outbreak has also sparked growing concerns among healthcare experts about a possible mutating influenza strain. What makes this situation worse is the unusual timing. Japan’s flu season typically peaks between the months of December and February. Clinics have been advised to only prioritise severe cases and encourage other mild patients to seek outpatient treatment or even home treatment to ease the burden on hospitals and hospital staff. The government has also issued advisories promoting mask-wearing, hand hygiene, and avoiding crowded indoor gatherings, measures reminiscent of COVID-19 precautions.
