In a shocking breach of decorum, a 71-year-old lawyer, whose license has now been suspended, allegedly attempted to hurl a shoe towards Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai during court proceedings. The incident sparked huge outrage across the country; however, the attacker, identified as Rakesh Kishore , showed no remorse and defended himself."The almighty made me do it," Rakesh Kishore told ANI, adding, "I am neither going to apologise, nor do I regret it. I have not done anything; you are questioning me."

"I very much respect the judiciary and the Chief Justice of India, whoever he is,” the lawyer said, adding, “But on September 16, when Mr. Gavai, during a PIL hearing, said something against my God Vishnu’s idol in Khajuraho, I was deeply hurt. I have visited that temple many times and felt pained that the invaders had beheaded the idol. When he said, ‘You are a worshipper of Vishnu, go and pray to your God to refurbish the head,’ I felt a joke was made of Sanatan Dharma," Kishore told Times Now.Kishore told Times Now that "he has utmost respect for the judiciary," adding that his religious sentiment was "hurt".Kishore also recalled one of the statements made by the CJI in Mauritius regarding "bulldozer action" by the administration back home. "When he gave a statement in Mauritius that this country will not run through bulldozer, I couldn't tolerate it," he said, adding, "I also feel that this is not the way to put forward your point... But what forced someone should also be known to the world."

These things do not affect me," the CJI, who remained unfazed during the incident, told lawyers and continued hearing the mentioning of cases.Kishore e, a resident of Mayur Vihar in New Delhi, was questioned for three hours by Delhi police officials inside the apex court premises and was later allowed to go at 2 PM as no formal complaint was lodged. Police also returned his shoes to him. On this, he said, "He (CJI) has not done any favour by not taking action against me. He was the one who made fun of the Sanatan Dharm." The Bar Council of India (BCI) swung into action and swiftly ordered the immediate suspension of Rakesh Kishore e.Issuing the interim suspension order, BCI chairperson and senior advocate Manan Kumar Mishra said the advocate’s act was “prima facie inconsistent with the dignity of the court” and in clear violation of the professional conduct rules prescribed under the Advocates Act, 1961 and Bar Council of India Rules.Earlier on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to the CJI Gavai and said the attack was "reprehensible" and angered every Indian. "The attack on him earlier today in the Supreme Court premises has angered every Indian. There is no place for such reprehensible acts in our society. It is utterly condemnable," PM Modi posted on X. The prime minister also praised CJI Gavai for maintaining calm.
