Director Prem Kumar Slams Online Reviewers: 'Meiyazhagan Would Have Been Celebrated, If It Was Made In Malayalam'
Meiyazhagan, which released a year ago on September 27, 2024 has been celebrated by fans for its heartwarming storytelling and solid performances by its lead actors, Aravind Swamy and Karthi. The film
produced by Suriya and Jyotika under their banner 2D entertainment, was made on a budget of Rs 25 crore, went on to earn Rs 55 crore at the box office. However, in a recent interview, Prem Kumar, the film's director has spoken about the film's underperformance at the box office.
'Meiyazhagan Would Have Been Celebrated In Malayalam' Says Director Prem Kumar
In a recent chat with Bharadwaj Rangan, Prem Kumar has revealed that the film would have performed much better, if it would have been made in Malayalam. He said "I got the credit of making a good film, so many appreciated me after its OTT release. But after it released in theatres, so called 'reviewers' posed a threat to the film, by the time I could cross that, I got tired, but for the film to really win appreciation, it had to land on OTT." He went on to slam online reviewers 'those who speak so negatively about Tamil cinema and the film industry have some mental illness. Others may be scared of them, but I am not. This may be their bread and butter, but this is definitely not healthy."
The film, a rural drama that narrates a story about human relationships receiving positive responses since its release, however the film's lengthy runtime of 2 hours 57 minutes received a backlash from film buffs. The makers of Meiyazhagan then took audiences' feedback, and they trimmed the film close to 18 minutes to make it more engaging.

Following the announcement, the film's director C Prem Kumar penned a note, thanking audience for the feedback.He posted "Thank you to all of you who have given grace to the love-made meiyazhagan. Thank you for instilling the belief that you are ready for a screen experience that deviates from the conventional style of screen language. A lot of experience sharing has increased the confidence in this work. The love and taste of most of those who have felt and understood Meiyazagan are astounding.On the work front, director Prem Kumar, is teaming up with actor Fahadh Faasil for a new film. The shoot is expected to begin shooting for the film in January next year
