Good News Bihar! Nitish Kumar To Launch First Metro in Patna Ahead of Elections- Check Stations, Opening Date

Patna: Bihar's capital is poised to join the ranks of India's metro cities as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is set to inaugurate the first phase of the Patna Metro rail service on October 6, today. The metro, which aims to ease the city's traffic congestion, will officially open to the public on October 7.Patna Metro: Route DetailsThe initial phase of the Patna Metro, known as the 'Blue Line', encompasses a 3.6-kilometre elevated stretch connecting three vital stations: the New Patliputra Bus Terminal, Zero Mile, and Bhoothnath. This segment forms part of Corridor-II, which ultimately links Patna Junction to the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) over a total distance of 14.5 kilometres. The complete corridor will feature five elevated and seven underground stations.

Patna Metro Stations

The five stations included in the first phase are:- New Patliputra Bus Terminal- Zero Mile- Bhootnath- Khemnichak- Malahi Pakadi (scheduled to open by the end of 2025)The metro project, executed by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC) in collaboration with the Bihar government, represents a significant investment in public transport infrastructure aimed at providing a sustainable and efficient alternative for commuters.Following the inauguration, CM Kumar will travel from the ISBT depot to Bhoothnath station on a three-coach train. The metro service will operate daily from 8 AM to 10 PM, with fares ranging from ₹15 to ₹30.

Modern Features

The metro coaches are designed to accommodate 158 seated passengers, with additional standing space for up to 940. Each coach includes modern amenities such as charging points for mobile devices and laptops, front emergency doors, and bi-parting sliding doors for safety. The interior design reflects Bihar's cultural heritage, featuring motifs of local landmarks such as Golghar and Mahavir Mandir, presented in saffron hues.The metro stations will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including escalators, lifts, ticket vending machines, and public address systems. Concourse areas will offer waiting zones, information kiosks, food courts, retail shops, and baggage screening facilities.The depot at Ramachak Bairiya, which spans 76 acres, will also be inaugurated. It is designed to accommodate up to 32 three-coach trains and includes essential operational features such as an automated washing unit and an operations control centre.The Patna Metro project, with a total estimated cost of ₹13,925 crore, has faced numerous challenges since its inception in 2019, including delays due to land acquisition and the COVID-19 pandemic. The construction of Corridor-I, which will span 17.9 kilometres from Danapur to Khemnichak, is also currently underway.As Patna prepares for the launch of its metro system, it will become the 24th city in India to operate a metro rail service, marking a significant milestone in the state's urban development.(With inputs from PTI)
