Federline alleged that Spears would watch sons Sean Preston and Jayden James sleep at night with a knife in her hand. Spears and Federline were married for three years and divorced in 2007; the dancer was granted sole legal and physical custody of their sons after her psychiatric hold in 2008.

The singer's own memoir, The Woman in Me, was published in 2023. Until 2021, the singer was under a strict conservatorship placed by her father, Jamie Spears. After a long legal battle and fans gathering support to 'Free Britney,' the singer was emancipated after 13 years. In You Thought You Knew, Federline writes, "[Sean and Jayden] would awaken sometimes at night to find her standing silently in the doorway, watching them sleep — 'Oh, you're awake?' — with a knife in her hand. Then she'd turn around and pad off without explanation."Federline also alleges that Spears is still not alright. He states, "This situation with Britney feels like it's racing toward something irreversible. Now, more than ever, they need your support…I've been their buffer for years, but now it's bigger than me. It's time to sound the alarm."
