The Maharashtra government and the State Election Commission have been directed by the Supreme Court to conduct local body polls in the state by January 31, 2026, and have also been asked to complete the delimitation process by October 10 this year.This comes after the Supreme Court, in its earlier May 6 order, directed the poll body to issue notification for the polls within four weeks and complete elections within four months.However, the State Election Commission failed to comply with the directions.But now, the Supreme Court has fixed a firm date for the State Election Commission to complete the delimitation and conduct the elections by January 31 next year.
BMC Reviews Suggestions for Delimitation?
In another development, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) heard a total of 277 suggestions and objections regarding the draft ward delimitation for the upcoming civic elections on the second day of the public hearing on Thursday, officials said.The hearing was conducted at the Yashwantrao Chavan Centre located opposite the Mantralaya in south Mumbai, under the chairmanship of Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Iqbal Singh Chahal, who has been appointed as the authorised officer for the process.The remaining suggestions and objections will be heard on September 13, the civic body said.The draft delimitation notification, detailing the proposed geographical boundaries of the BMC wards, was published on August 22.
