When it comes to dissecting the difference between the weight of a car and a bike- it’s mostly factors like size, capacity, structure and such, that most people pay attention to. However, when Congress
leader and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, spoke on something similar, it left the internet in buzz instead. Gandhi shared his take on ‘electric motors’ at a university in Colombia, where his reasoning behind why a “one-passenger” car weighs “3000kg”, while a “one or even two-passenger” bike only weighs “100 kg” left many puzzled.A video of him addressing the students showed him comparing the differences, where he concluded the discussion by stating that the reason why a car weighs so much more is because of its engine. He then explained that a car uses much more metal because it is “designed to stop the engine from killing” the passengers inside it. “The entire car is designed to stop the engine from killing you,” he was heard saying. As seen in the video, the theory was to ultimately advocate for the ‘electric motor’. Reportedly, the Congress leader was speaking at the EIA University in Medellin, Colombia. “Why does a motorcycle weigh 100kg and a car weigh 3000kg? A car carries one passenger, you need 3000 kg of metal in a car. And a motorcycle has 100 kgs, and carries two passengers. So why is a motorcycle able to carry two passengers with 150kg of metal and a car needs 3000kgs? This question is at the centre of the transition to electric,” Gandhi was heard saying. “What about a car that requires 3000kg of metal? The answer is the engine. In a motorcycle when you have an impact, the engine is separated from you. But in a car, when you have an impact, the engine comes into the car. The entire car is designed to stop the engine from killing you,” he further explained.
