Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has waived off the charges for biometric updates for children in the age group of 7–15 years. The move is likely to benefit six crore children."The waiver of MBU charges came into effect on 1st October 2025 and will remain in force for one year. Free Biometric Updates in Aadhaar to Ease Children’s Access to Education, Scholarships and DBT Schemes," the Ministry of Electronics & IT said in a statement.This move is likely to help reduce backlogs and ensure compliance with Aadhaar maintenance guidelines.
The UIDAI has revised the fee structure for Aadhaar-related services for biometric updates, demographic changes, and document submissions for other age groups.Additionally, UIDAI has released the fee roadmap for the following cycle, effective from October 2028 to September 2031.Charges for Aadhaar-related Services Aadhaar-related services like updating demographic information, such as name, gender, date of birth, address, mobile number, or email, will be free if completed simultaneously with a biometric update. When performed separately, the charge may vary from Rs 50 to Rs 75 per update.Charges for document updates, involving the submission of identity or address proofs, have been raised to Rs 75 from the previous Rs 50. This will, however, remain free on the myAadhaar portal until 14 June 2026. For most biometric updates outside the 5-7 and 15-17 age groups, the fee will be Rs 125.Timely completion of MBU is an essential requirement for maintaining the accuracy and reliability of the biometric data of children.Failing to complete the MBU even after the child crosses seven years of age could lead to the deactivation of the Aadhaar number, as per the existing rules.Aadhaar with updated biometric facilitates ease of living and ensures seamless usage of Aadhaar in availing services such as school admissions, registering for entrance examinations, availing benefits of scholarships, DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) schemes, etc. wherever applicable. The UIDAI has advised parents, guardians to update biometrics of their children, wards in Aadhaar, on priority.
