The Indian government has raised concerns over "humanitarian consequences" of the US' decision to hike the H-1B visa application to $100,000 fee per application, stating the full implication of the move is being studied.
"This measure is likely to have humanitarian consequences by way of the disruption caused for families. Government hopes that these disruptions can be addressed suitably by the US authorities," the Ministry of External Affairs said in an official statement released on Saturday, September
20.
The ministry further emphasised that it is beneficial for both India and the US to maintain strong ties among its people and reminded that both countries have benefitted from exchanges of skilled talent.
India said such immigration have contributed enormously to technology development, innovation, economic growth, and wealth creation in both countries.

"Policymakers will therefore assess recent steps taking into account mutual benefits," the ministry said.
Changes to the H-1B visa is likely to hit Indian immigrants the hardest as Indians made up 71% of H-1B visa approvals in FY24, followed by China (11.7%), and other countries (17%).
Current H-1B holders inside the US face no immediate cost, but holders outside the US at the time of the rule change (e.g., traveling or on vacation) cannot re-enter unless their employer files a petition with the $100,000 payment.
Several American companies such as tech giant Microsoft and financial major JP Morgan have already issued advisory urging employees on H-1B and H-4 visas to return before the new visa fee rules take effect on September 21.
