About the Bridge
The 1.2-kilometre-long flyover, constructed at a cost of ₹164.92 crore, connects South Usman Road with CIT Nagar First Main Road. Designed to ease heavy traffic flow into Tamil Nadu's busiest shopping hub, T Nagar, the bridge is expected to benefit thousands of commuters daily.
According to a Chennai news paper DT Next, a senior corporation official explained that the flyover would help ease cross-city travel. “Vehicles from Saidapet and Guindy can now reach Nungambakkam and Chetpet easily. Similarly, vehicles from Mahalalingapuram can reach CIT Nagar 1st Main Road and Anna Salai in a few minutes,” the official said.
A key feature of the project is its seamless integration with the pre-existing 0.8 km flyover in the locality. Together, the two structures now form a two km continuous elevated corridor that allows motorists to bypass ground-level congestion. With this link, travel between areas such as Saidapet, Guindy, Adyar, Kodambakkam, Anna Nagar and Nungambakkam is expected to be significantly faster. The reduced idling time is also projected to cut fuel usage and vehicular emissions.
Built under the Infrastructural and Amenities Fund, the project is being hailed as both an engineering and financial milestone. Officials have described the flyover as a symbol of Chennai's infrastructure ambitions, underscoring the city's shift towards modern and sustainable mobility solutions. Advanced construction methods were deployed to ensure durability, while design upgrades were incorporated to enhance safety and long-term performance.
The bridge also holds significance as Tamil Nadu's first steel flyover executed by the state government. Until now, the only steel structure of this kind in the state was built by the National Highways Authority of India.
Civic planners believe this project not only addresses pressing traffic issues but also sets a benchmark for future infrastructure initiatives in Chennai.
