What is the story about?
Air India will start commercial flights from Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) as soon as the airport opens, the group announced Tuesday. The airport is being developed by Adani Airport Holdings Ltd.
“We look forward to commencing operations at Navi Mumbai International Airport, as Mumbai joins the league of world cities with more than one airport,” Campbell Wilson, CEO & MD ofAir India, said.
“We are happy to work with Adani Airports to build NMIA not only as a point that connects to the rest of India, but also as one of the country’s key global transit hubs for both passengers and cargo,” he added.
In the first phase of the new airport, Air India Express will run 20 flights a day to 15 cities across India. This will result in 40 air traffic movements (ATMs), which means each take-off and landing is counted separately.
By mid-2026, the airline plans to increase this to 55 flights a day, including up to 5 international flights fromNMIA.
By Winter 2026, the number of daily flights is expected to rise to 60, connecting more cities in India and abroad.
“Our expansion at NMIAwill support India’s growth as a global aviation hub,” Wilson said.
Arun Bansal, CEO of Adani Airport Holdings, said, “We are delighted to welcome Air India Group to Navi Mumbai International Airport as one of our valued airline partners. Their ambitious expansion plans and global vision are perfectly aligned with our aim of making NMIA a benchmark in global aviation.”
Other airlines are also preparing for NMIA operations. IndiGo will start with 18 daily departures to over 15 destinations, expanding to 140 daily departures, including 30 international flights, by November 2026.
Akasa Air plans over 100 domestic flights per week initially, scaling to 300 domestic and 50 international weekly departures by winter 2025-26.
The NMIA is being developed in five phases. In the first phase, the airport will be able to handle 20 million passengers each year and manage 0.5 million metric tonnes of cargo.
Once all five phases are completed, NMIA will have the capacity to serve 90 million passengers annually and handle up to 3.2 million metric tons of cargo, making it one of India’s largest airports in terms of both passenger traffic and cargo operations.
