What is the story about?
India’s homegrown navigation platform Mappls, by MapmyIndia, has rolled out a suite of first-in-India smart mobility features—including AI-powered live traffic signal timers, NHAI annual toll pass savings, and toll road distance tracking—to make driving safer, smoother, and more cost-efficient.
Developed in collaboration with the Bengaluru Traffic Police, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and Arcadis, these tools are designed to help commuters plan better, save money on tolls, and drive more responsibly.
Rakesh Verma, Co-Founder and Managing Director of MapmyIndia, said the move aligns with the company’s mission to build a "smarter mobility ecosystem" for Indian commuters. "These innovations will not only help save time, money, and stress but also lay the foundation for a safer and more connected India," he said.
Live traffic signal timers
In a pilot rollout with the Bengaluru Traffic Police and Arcadis, over 125 smart signals have been integrated into the Mappls app. Drivers can now view real-time traffic signal countdowns up to 500 meters in advance, including green, amber, and red lights.
"This is a major leap for traffic management," said Karthik Reddy (IPS), Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Bengaluru. "By showing live signal timers, commuters can plan better, reduce uncertainty, and improve road discipline." He added that the project is part of Bengaluru’s broader push toward smarter, safer traffic systems, with plans to expand the feature to more cities soon.
NHAI toll pass savings
In partnership with NHAI, Mappls has introduced a new feature showing potential toll savings for users who purchase the NHAI Annual Toll Pass. Commuters can see savings before starting a trip.
A.R. Chitranshi, COO of IHMCL (NHAI's tech arm), said the integration helps make highway travel "more transparent and cost-effective."
Mappls now shows exact kilometres travelled on each toll road, giving drivers clarity on toll road usage and costs—a move that could improve travel budgeting and accountability.
