His sister, Palme Borthakur, and music composer Rahul Gautam, a protégé of the singer, lit the funeral pyre as gun salutes were offered. Guided by priests, they circumambulated the pyre seven times, while those present stood in silence.

Zubeen's wife, Garima Saikia Garg, sat by the side of the platform, weeping inconsolably through the rituals. As the flames rose, chants of "Zubeen, Zubeen" echoed in the air, with mourners breaking into his famous song Mayabini Ratir Buku.

The Assam Police paid final honours with a gun salute and the sounding of the bugle. His mortal remains were placed on the pyre to the accompaniment of Vedic hymns and conch shells.

Family members performed the rituals, joined by Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Kiren Rijiju, along with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who placed wood on the pyre. In a poignant gesture, a branch from the sandalwood tree Zubeen had planted on his birthday in 2017 was also placed on the pyre.

Garg's body underwent a second post-mortem examination at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital on Tuesday morning.
Educational institutions were closed across the state in honour of the icon, while government offices were shut only in the Kamrup (Metro) district.
Huge LED screens were put up in several places across the state so that fans can witness Garg's last journey.
The 52-year-old icon died while swimming in the sea in Singapore on September 19. His body reached the city on September 21 morning from Singapore. It was first taken to his Kahilipara residence, with thousands lining the 25-km stretch from the airport, before being laid for public homage at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex in Sarusajai in the afternoon.
