What is the story about?
Courtroom drama Jolly LLB 3, headlined by Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi, saw its opening day (Friday) net collection in India come in at ₹12.75 crore, according to Sacnilk. The film has received good word of mouth but fell just short of opening as high as its predecessor.
The film got off to a slow start on the first day, with morning shows only hitting about 10.28% occupancy. But there was a slow and steady rise: the afternoon shows saw this improve to about 17.46% and the evening and night shows jumped to around 39.45%. Prominent metropolitan areas have fared differently: in Delhi-NCR, occupancy was around 29.33% while it was about 23% in Mumbai.
As per industry tracker Sacnilk, it grossed around ₹3.23 crore in advance ticket sales, selling more than 1.2 lakh tickets before the release date. This pre-release hype and build-up gave Jolly LLB 3 a head start over some of Akshay Kumar's recent films, specifically Sky Force (₹12.25 crore) and Kesari Chapter 2 (₹7.75 crore).
However, it fell short of Jolly LLB 2's Day 1 gross, which was approximately ₹13.2 crore. It also trails the opening day earnings of another comedy franchise film, Housefull 5, which brought in ₹24 crore.
The film showed fewer than 4,000 shows on day one. For comparison,
Sitaare Zameen Par had approximately 9,000 shows on its first day, and Housefull 5 also had 6,000 shows on day one.
This week, Anurag Kashyap's limited theatrical release Nishaanchi, which debuted with just ₹25 lakh, shares the box office window with Jolly LLB 3. The Telugu fantasy-action movie Mirai, which is still running strong in its second week and has made ₹67.6 crore so far, will continue to compete with it.
According to analysts, Jolly LLB 3's opening is strong – modest initial occupancy combined with positive word of mouth – for what is expected to be a strong first weekend. With a good audience response and good reviews, trade pundits feel collections could see a significant jump in the next two days.
