What is the story about?
A Delhi court has rejected former Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) officer Sameer Wankhede's defamation plea against Red Chillies Entertainment, owned by Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan and his wife Gauri Khan, for their series Ba***ds of Bollywood.
The spotlight has now turned on the actor, Ashish Kumar, who played the narcotics officer in the Netflix show. Ashish said when he uploaded his picture from the series, many compared him to someone else (a clear reference to Wankhede).
The actor distanced himself from the controversy, saying he does not want to get dragged into such comparisons. “I am not anyone else, I just did my job by playing the cop's role,” he clarified.
He stressed that the photo he uploaded, where he is dressed as a narcotics officer, was from his own role in the series. “It's me, I am him, and I can use the picture for myself,” he said, adding, “I don't like any kind of cheap publicity.”
Wankhede, who had accused the film's makers of maligning his image, argued that the series directly linked him to the 2021 drugs-on-cruise case involving Shah Rukh Khan's son, Aryan.
He filed a suit over a character who played a strict narcotics officer. He is shown targeting only Bollywood celebrities. He claimed the portrayal was clearly based on him and described the series as containing false, malicious, and defamatory content.
A one-bench judge, Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav, asked Wankhede the reason behind filing the defamation suit in Delhi instead of Mumbai, where the series was produced and primarily shot. Wankhede's lawyer argued that the Netflix series is available online nationwide, including in Delhi.
“Your plaint is not maintainable here in Delhi. I am rejecting your plaint. Had your case been that you have been defamed at various places, including in Delhi, and the maximum damage has occurred in Delhi, we would have still considered the matter here in Delhi," said Judge Kaurav.
In his suit, Wankhede sought directions to Red Chillies Entertainment and Netflix to remove a segment from Episode 1 of The Ba***ds of Bollywood, from 32:02 to 33:50, claiming it features a character who closely resembles him in appearance and mannerisms.
He has demanded ₹2 crore in damages for defamation, stating that the amount will be donated to cancer patients.
