“This is a historic moment in Indian entertainment,” former Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani said in an interview with CNBC-TV18.
“For far too long, women and children’s health has remained on the margins of mainstream dialogue. This initiative is a powerful step towards changing that,” Irani added.
Gates’ appearance is expected to span three episodes and will focus on maternal and newborn health, subjects closely aligned with the charitable work of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The segment will feature Microsoft’s co-founder conversing with Irani’s character, Tulsi Virani, via video call.
Confirming Gates’ special appearance, Irani said, “To bring together one of the world’s most respected global voices with one of Indian television’s most influential storytellers is more than a collaboration — it is the start of a Jan Andolan, a people’s movement rooted in awareness, empathy, and action.”
The cameo forms part of the show’s latest plot arc, centred on raising awareness about pregnancy and infant care. “The storyline focuses on creating and improving awareness about the health of pregnant women and newborns,” a source told the outlet.
Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2 has been attracting attention for its deliberate effort to incorporate social issues into its plot, covering themes from body positivity to generational conflict and women’s empowerment, alongside its entertainment appeal.
Producer Ekta Kapoor is reportedly doing everything possible to keep the show engaging and captivating, with Bill Gates’ rare guest appearance being a part of that strategy.
The cameo follows several notable guest appearances on the series. Earlier this year, actors Sakshi Tanwar and Kiran Karmarkar reprised their legendary roles in a highly anticipated reunion.
The latest episode airs on StarPlus at 10:30 pm and is available to stream on JioHotstar, as part of a limited season consisting of 165–170 episodes.
