What is the story about?
A prequel to the 2025 horror film Weapons, focusing on the origin story of the occult expert Aunt Gladys, is in the works. Weapons director Zach Cregger confirmed the project, adding he already has a story.
The filmmaker revealed that he is in talks with Warner Bros. for the project. The upcoming film will centre on the mysterious and creepy antagonist, Aunt Gladys, played by Amy Madigan.
Cregger revealed in an interview with Fangoria that he already has a story for the film and that the idea was in his ‘pocket’ even before
Weapons was released. “It is real, and I’ve been talking to Warner Bros. about it. There’s a story, and I’m pretty excited about it. It’s not bullsh–,” the horror helmer told the magazine.
“I was ready,” Cregger explained how the prequel idea came about, adding, “I had it kind of in my pocket before the movie came out.” With a budget of $40 million, Weapons grossed more than $260 million worldwide.
Days after Weapons' successful opening weekend, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that a prequel was being considered. The storyline will reportedly revolve around Aunty Gladys’ history that was cut by Cregger during the film's production.
The director is currently working on the Resident Evil reboot for Sony Pictures, which is based on Capcom’s popular horror video games. Cregger revealed that his version will contain fresh characters rather than retelling the story of well-known game characters. “It is obedient to the lore of the games, it’s just a different story. I’m not going to tell Leon’s story, because Leon’s story is told in the games,” Cregger added.
Earlier, Madigan, who plays the eerily sinister aunt, revealed her potential return to the franchise. “It's not that I discount it, but in this business, nothing's real 'til it's real,” she had said.
Directed, written, and produced by Zach Cregger, Weapons is a horror film that centres on the mysterious disappearance of a group of schoolchildren, sparking fear and rage in their community. In addition to Madigan, it also stars Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, and Cary Christopher.
Madigan plays Aunt Gladys, who appears to be a normal person but is actually a witch who uses the life powers of the missing children to heal herself.
The film is now available to stream for Indian viewers on OTT platforms like Prime Video, but requires a rental fee to watch.
