What is the story about?
HBO Max has unveiled the first official trailer of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which will feature the iconic team of Ser Duncan the Tall and Egg in a story that takes place about a century before Game of Thrones.
Author-executive producer George R R Martin, showrunner Ira Parker, and lead actors Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell revealed the trailer at New York Comic Con. It focuses on a more grounded, character-driven plot than the sweeping epic dramas that preceded it.
Releasing the trailer on social media, HBO Max announced: “A tall tale that became legend. The new #GameOfThrones series, #AKnightoftheSevenKingdoms, premieres January 18 on HBO Max (sic).”
A solemn Dunk, portrayed by Peter Claffey, is shown in the trailer burying his mentor, Ser Arlan, before departing for the Westeros tournament scene. He meets Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell) along the way, a younger friend whose identity proves to be more complex than initially appears. With Egg serving as his assistant, the modest Dunk begins to realise his potential as a knight.
The trailer shows how Dunk transforms from a squire to a knight, becoming Ser Duncan the Tall. He travels to the Ashford tournament and swears to protect the weak and defenceless.
He is viewed as an average man there by many, including some arrogant Targaryens. With Egg as his squire, Dunk begins to feel that he can become the knight he was meant to be.
“A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms seems to really stand out from Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, because it's the story of one man, rather than a tale about many noble families... Looks interesting,” one X (formerly Twitter) user commented.
“That's great. It's not like the white walkers, magic, dragons, or anything, actually fantasy-like was what pulled me into the original Game of Thrones show or anything,” read another comment.
“This new 'Game of Thrones' chapter will bring Westeros' golden age to life, reign over fans' hearts,” said one.
Martin's ‘Tales of Dunk and Egg’ novellas, specifically The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight, served as the inspiration for the television series. The Hedge Knight is expected to be adapted for Season 1. With only six planned episodes, each lasting roughly 30 minutes, the show strives for a more condensed, personal story perspective.
The trailer depicts a Westeros still ruled by the Targaryens, featuring diaries of equestrian contests, swordplay, and the conflict between knights and nobles. The cast also includes Finn Bennett, Bertie Carvel, Sam Spruell, Daniel Ings, and Tanzyn Crawford in supporting roles.
The six 30-minute episodes of the series will debut on HBO Max on January 18. The last episode will be streamed on February 25, 2026. The show will debut on JioHotstar in India on January 19.

From the trailer, it also seems more light-hearted and comical.
Looks interesting.
