Oct 13 is Columbus Day: Will the US stock market be shut?

The US stock market will remain open on October 13, which will be celebrated as Columbus Day in the US.

While both the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq will be operational during their regular hours, the bond market is closed on account of the national holiday in the US on Oct 13. 

Here's everything else that will be closed for business on Monday:

Financial Institutions

• Most banks, including major chains like Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, and Wells Fargo, are closed due to the Federal Reserve holiday. ATMs and online banking will remain operational.​


• Some retail banks may keep select branches open.

Government and Postal Services

• Federal government offices and most state/city offices are closed, including departments like the DMV and public libraries.​


• All United States Postal Service offices are closed. There is no regular mail delivery, with the exception of limited Priority Mail Express in certain areas.​


• UPS and FedEx generally operate with regular or modified service—UPS is fully open; FedEx has modified service on some products.​​

Schools and Courts

• Public schools are mostly closed, but closures can vary from school district to another. Please check the local school calendar.​


• Courts at the federal, state, and municipal levels are closed.​

Markets and Retail

• Most major retailers, including Walmart, Target, CVS, and grocery stores, are open with regular hours, though some local businesses may adjust their schedule.​


• Restaurants and bars are allowed to open.​


• Liquor stores are mostly open, but policies may vary locally.​


• Garbage pickup varies by location; local confirmation is recommended.​

Public Transit and Museums

• Most public transit agencies operate on a Sunday or holiday schedule. Check specific city operations before travelling.​


• Many museums and national parks are open, often providing free or special admission, but check ahead for timed entry requirements.
