What is the story about?
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday (Oct 8) issued summons to Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment, global streaming platform Netflix, and others in connection with a defamation suit filed by former NCB Mumbai zonal director Sameer Wankhede.
Wankhede has alleged that the recently released Netflix series Ba***ds of Bollywood , directed by Aryan Khan, contains false and defamatory portrayals that malign his reputation.
The court has directed Red Chillies Entertainment and other respondents to file their replies within seven days, while instructing Wankhede to provide them with copies of the petition. The matter has been listed for hearing on October 30.
In his plea, Wankhede has sought a permanent and mandatory injunction, a declaration, and damages worth ₹2 crore — an amount he has stated should be donated to the Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital for the treatment of cancer patients. Earlier, a Delhi court had rejected Wankhede's defamation plea.
The seven-part series, which premiered on Netflix on September 18, has sparked controversy after viewers pointed out similarities between a character in the show and Wankhede. The character, introduced at the end of the first episode, is portrayed as an officer of an agency named "NCG," leading a "war against drugs." His appearance and demeanour, white shirt, dark trousers, and distinct hairstyle, drew immediate comparisons to the officer.
Wankhede came into national focus in 2021 for leading the NCB probe that resulted in the arrest of Aryan Khan in a high-profile drug case. Although the makers have not explicitly stated that the character is based on him, social media users have widely speculated that the resemblance is intentional.
The series is produced by Red Chillies Entertainment and marks Aryan Khan’s directorial debut.
