The news was confirmed by Disney’s 20th Century Studios on social media, leaving fans buzzing with excitement. On Instagram, the studio shared a poster of a hand reaching for a signature pink donut that had the number 2 written all over it, along with the caption: "Homer’s coming back for seconds." That same update was posted on X with a note that read, "Woohoo! The Simpsons are coming to theaters with an all-new movie on July 23, 2027!"

This long-awaited sequel replaces an untitled Marvel film that was previously on Disney’s schedule. This means there would not be a new Marvel release between Avengers: Doomsday in December 2026 and Avengers: Secret Wars in December 2027.
Meanwhile, no plot details of the film have been revealed yet. The Simpsons Movie, set in the fictional town of Springfield, saw the entire town trapped under a giant glass dome after Homer polluted the lake. That movie was a massive hit, raking in a jaw-dropping $536 million worldwide.
Kirk Honeycutt of The Hollywood Reporter had also praised the film back then, writing that the team “laboured long and hard to make a movie that hearkens back to the vintage years of the series.” He described it as “caustic, irreverent, constantly amusing and a tiny bit rude,” and added, “It’s almost — dare I say it — charming.”
Since its debut in 1989, The Simpsons has become the longest-running animated sitcom in television history, with over 790 episodes spanning 36 seasons. It has even launched 37 seasons and has already been renewed through its 40th season, which will air in 2028–29.
Showrunner Matt Selman recently reflected on how the series continues to thrive because of streaming. “Now instead of the kids watching it on local TV in the afternoon, they can just watch it all, all the time, all day, all forever,” he told Variety in a past interview.
