Canada listed the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, which threatened actor Salman Khan and is behind inciting fears in many other famous personalities, as a "terrorist entity" on Monday, September 29.
The Canada's Minister of Public Safety, Gary Anandasangaree, announced the decision taken by the government on X (formerly Twitter).
"Our government listed the Bishnoi Gang as a terrorist entity. Violence, terror, and the intimidation of communities will never be tolerated in Canada. We’re taking action to combat these threats," Anandasangaree said.
The decision has been taken under Canada's Criminal Code, under which anything owned by the Bishnoi group in Canada - property, vehicles, money - can be frozen or seized.
It also gives Canadian law enforcement more tools to prosecute terrorist offences, including those related to financing, travel and recruitment, as per a statement by the Canadian government.
The Criminal Code listing can also be used by immigration and border officials to inform decisions on admissibility to Canada under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
The decision taken by the Canadian government comes at a time when both India and Canada are working towards reviving their bilateral relations, which started to sour in 2023 when Canada accused India of killing a Khalistani supporter and activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
India dismissed the claims and recalled diplomatic officials including the High Commissioner. Recently, both the countries appointed new High Commissioners as a sign of a progress towards normalising relations.
The Bishnoi gang is facing several charges in India related to involvement in criminal activities, weapons smuggling, explosives and drug smuggling, as per news agency PTI.
Earlier, the Bishnoi gang was working with Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar, who reportedly has close links with pro-Khalistan terror outfits.
The gang's leader Bishnoi, alias Balkaran Barar, has been in custody for over a decade now and manages to operate his syndicate from jails.
He has been accused of orchestrating high-profile murders of Punjabi Singer Sidhu Moosewala in 2022, Karni Sena chief Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi in 2023, as per PTI.
A Mumbai special court, on Sept 24, refused bail to an alleged Bishnoi gang member, in a case related to shooting at actor Salman Khan's residence in 2024.
The first public incident of Bishnoi gang going after Khan came to light in 2018. "We will kill Salman Khan. Everyone will know once we take action. I have not done anything as of now, they are accusing me of crimes for no reason," Bishnoi had said during a court appearance in Jodhpur, as per PTI.
The actor has received multiple death threats since then.
The animosity reportedly arises from the infamous blackbuck poaching case of 1998 which involved Khan during the shoot of his film 'Hum Saath-Saath Hain', which hurt the sentiments of the Bishnoi community which revers the animal.
