What is the story about?
SpiceJet, India's low-cost domestic airline, has received and added three new aircraft to its operational fleet. It's an Airbus A340 wide-body and two Boeing 737s.
The new planes will enter service on October 10 and 11. The expansion strategy is designed to meet the growing demand for air travel during the holiday season.
The three new aircraft are the first of a total of 20 planes the airline plans to induct between October and November 2025. The additional aircraft will be operated under a damp-lease arrangement.
The IATA-IOSA certified airline also plans to unground four planes by mid-December.
The addition of these planes is a key component of SpiceJet's aim to considerably expand its operations this winter. The airline is on target to more than double its operating fleet size and triple its available seat kilometres (ASKMs) by introducing new routes, increasing aircraft frequencies, and expanding its network with interesting destinations.
Ajay Singh, chairman and managing director of SpiceJet, announced this major expansion plan, stating that they will significantly increase their fleet size, add new routes, and boost operational capabilities to meet the strong travel demand.
“This is just the beginning of a large-scale expansion that will redefine SpiceJet’s operations this winter. With every new induction, we are strengthening our operational capabilities, opening new routes, and ensuring greater convenience and connectivity for our passengers across India and beyond.
“These new inductions will more than double our operational fleet and triple our ASKM by December 2025. Our fleet expansion reflects the robust travel demand we are witnessing and our readiness to meet it with confidence,” he said.
Earlier, Spicejet announced new flights to Port Blair, Udaipur and Ayodhya. The new services include daily flights from Kolkata and Delhi to Port Blair, as well as from Delhi and Mumbai to Udaipur, providing passengers with a convenient gateway to two of the country's most scenic destinations. While flights to Port Blair have already begun, service to Udaipur from Delhi and Mumbai will begin on November 6, 2025.
It also launched special daily non-stop flights to Ayodhya from Delhi, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, and Hyderabad, in time for the Diwali festival.
