Nepal's new Prime Minister Shushila Karki appointed three new ministers in her interim government on Sunday, September 14.
The swearing-in ceremony is expected to be held on Monday, September 15, for Rameshore Khanal as finance minister, Om Prakash Aryal as home minister, and Kulman Ghising as energy minister, as per The Kathmandu Post.
The move comes after two days when Karki was appointed to head the interim government on Friday, September 12, following the ouster of former PM KP Sharma Oli after protests led by country's youth against the ban on social media platforms and corruption in the government.
Rameshore Khanal was the former finance secretary of Nepal, while Om Prakash Aryal is a senior advocate. Ghising was the former executive director of the Nepal Electricity Authority and has also been assigned additional responsibilities of Ministries of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, and Urban Development, as per the Post.
According to a close associate of Karki, the PM has decided to keep the Cabinet size of the interim government to 15 members. She has also started discussing the appointments for other profiles.
"There was pressure to appoint someone as home and finance minister in order to restore normalcy, instill hope among various stakeholders, including the business community, and give the public a sense of relief. That is why she picked some of the best people with proven professional integrity," Karki's aide was quoted as saying by the Post.
After taking charge of the government, Karki vowed that those who were involved in the vandalism during the protests would be brought to justice and "must be punished".
"The kind of arson and vandalism that has taken place is a criminal act. This was carried out in an organised manner. Those responsible must be punished," she was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
She added the arson and vandalism during the protests of September 9 was "pre-planned" and the Gen-Z protesters were not involved in such activities.
At least 72 people have died during the Nepal protests that witnessed destruction of property and vandalism that forced the resignation of Oli.
Chief Secretary Aryal informed that the death included three policemen, along with 59 protesters and 10 prisoners, as per PTI.
