“I am deeply humbled by the Executive Board's confidence in my appointment,” Katz said in a press release, adding, “The IMF plays an indispensable role at the heart of the international monetary system, and I very much look forward to helping lead the Fund, working closely with staff, and serving the membership.”
His tenure was proposed by IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva on September 19.
“At a time of significant transformations in the global economy, I am very pleased that the IMF's Executive Board has approved Katz's appointment. I warmly welcome him to the Fund team and look forward to working closely together,” Georgieva said.
She added that Katz 's experience in economic policy, international relations and strong leadership will help the IMF tackle complex challenges.

During his stint, he played a key role in creating the US government's economic partnership with Ukraine and negotiating on a multitude of regional and bilateral economic issues.
He has also served as a Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary for International Affairs, Counsellor to the Assistant Secretary for International Markets, and as a policy advisor in the Office of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence.
Katz also represented the US at international fora, including the Financial Stability Board. He also spent several years in the think tank community and the private sector.
He worked as a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, where he studied economic statecraft, international economic challenges, and central banking. He previously served as an investment banker at Goldman Sachs and at a global macro hedge fund.
