What is the story about?
The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday (September 23) stayed the state government’s move to cap movie ticket prices at ₹200 across all theatres, including multiplexes.
The Karnataka government had, in July, issued a draft notification under the Karnataka Cinemas (Regulation) (Amendment) Rules, 2025, mandating that ticket prices for all language films should not exceed ₹200 per show, inclusive of entertainment tax. The measure was aimed at making cinema more affordable to the public.
The move, however, drew opposition from the Multiplex Association of India (MAI). Its president, Kamal Gianchandani, argued that exhibitors had invested heavily in upgrading facilities on the assumption of a freely priced market. He warned that the policy change could put upwards of ₹2,000 crore of investments at risk.
