What is the story about?
Urban Company is no longer just a platform for on-demand services. As the company has been listed on the stock market, its co-founders have articulated a bold vision for the future: to become the "operating system for your home".
“We think of ourselves as a home platform. Anything inside your home is definitely relevant for us. We want to be the operating system for your home, the backbone for your home,” Abhiraj Bhal, Chairperson, MD and CEO, Urban Company, told CNBC-TV18 in an exclusive chat.
This strategic ambition moves Urban Company beyond individual services like cleaning, repairs, and beauty, into integrated home solutions powered by technology and innovation. The company is actively building a connected ecosystem where services, devices, and solutions converge, aiming to simplify life inside the four walls of a home.
“The goal is not just to provide a service… It’s to make sure that the entire home ecosystem is integrated, seamless, and intelligent,” added Varun Khaitan, Co-founder & COO, underscoring the company’s aim to create one of the largest connected ecosystems in the world for home services and products.
The turn began in 2023, when, after a decade of being a services company, Urban Company ventured into consumer durables with its Native line of water purifiers and smart door locks. It now plans to expand into air conditioning and home cleaning appliances.
Bhal elaborated, “If I take a 10-year view, I don’t think we’ll be limited to only water purifiers or electronic door locks… Native as a brand reflects being natively integrated into your home, into your life.”
“We don’t want to build run-of-the-mill products just to increase our revenue. That’s not our DNA. We want to deliver smart, high-quality solutions that stand apart,” he added.
Alongside Native, Urban Company continues to grow its core services and new offerings like InstaHelp, focusing on real-time service requests across home services categories. The company emphasises a data-driven approach to maximise service professional productivity, improve customer experience, and expand micro-market coverage across India’s 47 cities today, aiming to grow that to 100+ cities in the coming years.
Urban Company has now launched UC Instant, a real-time service enabling consumers to request instant help for urgent home service needs. Khaitan said, “InstaHelp is a big new service category for us because we see a phenomenal opportunity there and a big consumer need.”
Technology remains central to this strategy. Raghav Chandra, Co-Founder & CPTO, Urban Company, highlighted the firm’s focus on building a robust tech backbone to scale operations and deliver consistent service quality. He said, “All our business lines require a fair amount of investment. The backbone of how things work inside is through tech, where we are codifying, helping us scale. There's a whole wave of GenAI solutions that we can use across all facets of a business. These are things which we plan to be working on through here.”
Khaitan further explained their investment focus, saying, “It will be a mixture of investments in core services, new initiatives like InstaHelp, and the Native product line. We are building the tech backbone that will enable consistent service quality, better training for service professionals, and superior customer experience.”
With a market capitalisation now exceeding ₹25,000 crore, Urban Company is not just aiming for scale, but for deep market leadership as the go-to operating system for Indian homes over the next decade.
Acknowledging that building such an ecosystem is a long-term play, Bhal added, “We are only getting started; our scale is tiny. We’re not satisfied until we are at least 30 to 50 times larger.”
