While Tuesday's primaries provided another showcase of the Democrats' struggle between the ideological left and center, it also showed that in some states, for some races, experience was rewarded. For Republicans, a contest to replace the late Sen. Lindsey Graham pitted his sister, Darline Graham, against far more experienced candidates. But she also had the endorsement of President Donald Trump, and she secured a spot in a runoff election later this
month.
Most attention was focused on the Democratic nomination for governor in Wisconsin, where the insurgent candidacy of the socialist, Francesca Hong, was causing agita among more mainstream leaders in the party. The outcome of that race was not clear early Tuesday night.
Here are some early takeaways from the night's elections.
Darline Graham advanced to a runoff Tuesday night in the primary for her brother’s seat. She was appointed to fill the remaining months of his current term after his death last month.
Trump then endorsed her in the GOP primary to occupy the seat for the next six years. He also praised her Tuesday night after returning to Washington. The role Trump chooses to play in the next two weeks could be decisive in a state where he is quite popular.
A who’s who of conservative South Carolina politicians also competed for the rare prize of a senate seat, and Rep. Ralph Norman, a durable conservative who finished second, will face off against Graham in two weeks. Both candidates will need to consolidate votes from the other challengers to win.
While much of this year’s midterm campaign cycle has been animated by new candidates with provocative progressive messages and by the fact that being an incumbent seemed like a liability, Democratic voters in Connecticut and Minnesota gravitated toward the familiar in their respective choices for governor.
Connecticut’s two-term Gov. Ned Lamont defeated his progressive challenger in the state’s Democratic primary while Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who first won her seat 20 years ago, easily won her state’s nomination for governor.
Their victories ran counter to any trend toward younger, more progressive candidates who had scored surprising wins in several House primaries, and notably, in the Democratic Senate primary in Michigan last week. Lamont began his political rise as an insurgent challenger to incumbent Sen. Joe Lieberman but is now considered establishment. Klobuchar has a reputation as a bipartisan consensus-builder.
President Donald Trump won Wisconsin in 2024 and its state legislature has long been in the hands of the GOP, but Democrats have been bullish about reversing that trend. The biggest worry many in the party have is about Tuesday's primary.
Hong, a self-proclaimed democratic socialist with a trail of controversial prior statements and social media posts, has been the frontrunner for the party nomination for governor. The opposition to her is fractured among multiple candidates on the ballot, including former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes, who dropped out last month. The state's current Democratic governor, Tony Evers, is backing Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley.
Democratic strategists fear Hong could drag down the rest of the ticket in November and struggle against the Republican nominee, Rep. Tom Tiffany, who has Trump's backing and won easily on Tuesday.
The stakes are high in the races for Democrats nationally, not just Wisconsin residents. Democrats are hoping to win control of the state legislature, and the governor's mansion would give them the ability to redraw Wisconsin's map to counter the edge the GOP built up in this year's mid-decade redistricting. Without that, their path to a House majority in 2028 becomes challenging.
Democrats will also likely need to win Wisconsin to retake the White House in 2028, and the governor will play a key role in certifying the winner of the election. In 2020, Trump tried to claim Wisconsin despite it being won by Joe Biden, only to be blocked in part by Evers. Tiffany supported the president's attempt to overturn the election.
There are similar worries for Democrats in Minnesota, a state they've reliably won during the Trump years, but by shrinking margins. Moderate Rep. Angie Craig and liberal Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan are enmeshed in a heated battle for the party's nod for the senate seat being vacated by Klobuchar. GOP strategists hope the fight is divisive enough to provide an opening for their preferred candidate, sportscaster Michele Tafoya.
