Following the tragic Satya Niketan building collapse which claimed the lives of seven people, the Delhi government has now sprung into action. Chief Minister
Rekha Gupta has assured that the government will be constructing hostels for 10,000 students. CM Rekha Gupta in a statement said, the new hostels are to be built to ensure safety, security, and access to affordable housing for students. The government says these hostels will cater to both male and female students and any student enrolled in a university or college in Delhi will be able to avail of these facilities. Gupta added, "we have held meetings with the relevant departments capable of constructing hostels, identified suitable locations, and initiated the drafting of a policy." The Delhi government has said that students' needs and the amenities required within these hostels have been closely considered, while assuring that the newly built hostels will be trustworthy of parents across the country. Streets around the collapsed Hostel Daze PG in Satya Niketan used to be plastered with the chain's own banners and ad boards. Seven people died there. Locals say that almost as soon as the dust settled, the owner had those very boards ripped down and hidden. A large hoarding right across from the site was first draped in cloth, students nearby said, and then it was gone, torn to pieces. While rescue efforts were still underway, students from PGs across the neighbourhood rushed in to help. Those on the scene allege the accused owner had different priorities that day: protecting his brand's image, not the children trapped under the rubble. The fallout has been swift. Students across Satya Niketan are packing up and leaving, many pushed out by worried parents back home. And it isn't just this one branch. Times Now Digital found students at other Hostel Daze properties describing the same complaints: disputes over security deposits, food and water quality nobody checked, and grievances that went nowhere. The Delhi University in an earlier statement said, that over the past 100 years, the Universityhad 3,422 hostel seats at the university level, and now with an increase of 3,922 new seats, the total number of seats is set to more than double, reaching 7,344. According to DU data, in various colleges of the university as well, the total number of available seats over the past 100 years was 3,788 and are set to rise to 5,410, with an increase of 1,622 seats. The varsity has also pledged construction of additional hostels across university and college hostels.
