New Delhi: Heavy rain lashed several parts of Delhi on Monday, bringing traffic to a standstill and causing widespread waterlogging in low-lying areas.
The downpour also disrupted flight operations at the Delhi airport, forcing airlines to issue advisories. SpiceJet and Indigo urged passengers to check their flight status before leaving for the airport and advised them to allow extra travel time due to traffic congestion on city roads.
Advisory Issued by Airlines
'' Heavy rainfall continues across Delhi, and road conditions remain slow in several parts of the city. Waterlogging and low visibility are being reported on some routes to the airport. If you are travelling today, please allow for extra time and check your flight status on our app or website before you leave for the airport. Our teams are closely monitoring the situation and are available to assist you at all times,'' Indigo wrote on X.
'' Due to bad weather in Delhi (DEL), all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights might be affected. Passengers are requested to keep a check on their flight status,'' SpiceJet wrote on platform X.
Waterlogging and Traffic
Rainfall accompanied by gusty winds lashed parts of Delhi NCR, including the national capital, Gurugram and Noida. Traffic snarls, severe waterlogging and disruption of normal life are expected over the next two hours. Commuters have been advised to avoid low-lying stretches and take alternative routes as several key roads are already flooded. Public transport services are also likely to be affected, adding to the chaos during peak hours.Wettest August in 15 Years
According to IMD data, the capital logged 399.8 mm of rainfall in August, making it the wettest for the month in 15 years. The last time Delhi recorded more rainfall was in 2010, at 455.8 mm.Last month's rainfall also surpassed August 2024's 390.3 mm, which was spread over 17 rainy days and was at 67 per cent above the long-period average. This year, August saw rain on 14 days, with the total crossing the seasonal average.
In contrast, August 2023 saw just 91.8 mm of rain, while 2022 logged 41.6 mm and 2021 recorded 237 mm.
