TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — The U.S. military is currently engaged in a search for a pilot who was shot down over a remote area in Iran, while President Donald
Trump has refrained from commenting on the incident. He reminded Tehran of his deadline regarding the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, stating, “48 hours before all Hell will reign down on them.” The U.S. warplane, identified by Iranian authorities as an F-15E Strike Eagle, was one of two aircraft attacked on Friday. While one service member was rescued, Iran has announced a reward for information leading to the capture of the missing pilot. This incident marks the first time the United States has lost aircraft in Iranian territory during the ongoing conflict, which has now entered its sixth week, potentially increasing pressure on Trump to bring an end to hostilities.
Claims of Additional Attacks
On Saturday, Iran's joint military command claimed responsibility for striking two U.S. Black Hawk helicopters the previous day, although The Associated Press has not been able to independently verify this assertion. The conflict, which began with joint U.S.-Israel airstrikes on February 28, has resulted in significant casualties, destabilized global markets, disrupted essential shipping routes, and caused a surge in fuel prices. As Iran retaliates with attacks throughout the region, the conflict shows no signs of abating.
Damage to Oracle Headquarters
In a separate incident, an Iranian drone reportedly damaged the headquarters of U.S. technology company Oracle in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The Dubai Media Office described the event as a “minor incident caused by debris from an aerial interception,” confirming that there were no injuries. This incident follows threats from Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, which has accused large U.S. tech firms of engaging in “terrorist espionage” operations against the Islamic Republic.Diplomatic Efforts for Ceasefire
Pakistan's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Tahir Andrabi, indicated that efforts to broker a ceasefire are progressing. Pakistan has offered to host talks between the U.S. and Iran, with Iran's Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, confirming their willingness to participate.Mediators from Pakistan, Turkey, and Egypt are actively working to facilitate negotiations, aiming to reconcile the demands of both parties for a cessation of hostilities and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Search for the Missing Pilot
The search for the U.S. pilot is concentrated in the mountainous region of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad in Iran. While neither the White House nor the Pentagon has released detailed information, a Pentagon email indicated they received reports of “an aircraft being shot down” in the Middle East.A crew member was successfully rescued, but the Pentagon has informed the U.S. House Armed Services Committee that the status of a second service member remains unknown.
Threats to Global Shipping Routes
Iran's parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, issued a veiled threat to disrupt traffic through the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, a crucial waterway connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. Qalibaf emphasized the significance of this strait for global oil and gas shipments, raising concerns about the potential impact on international trade.Since the onset of the war, more than 1,900 individuals have lost their lives in Iran, with significant casualties reported across Gulf Arab states, Israel, and Lebanon.
