What is the story about?
Commuters on the Mumbai Metro Line 1 faced delays and overcrowding on Thursday morning after temporary speed restrictions were imposed following overnight
maintenance work. The disruption affected peak-hour travel between Ghatkopar and Versova, leading to longer waiting times and packed platforms at several stations. The metro operator later confirmed that the slowdown was part of routine safety measures. “As a standard safety precaution protocol, temporary speed restrictions are in place, which caused minor delays,” the operator said in a post on X.
Peak Hour Rush Hit As Trains Slow Down
The slowdown led to bunching of services on the busy Versova–Andheri–Ghatkopar corridor, causing inconvenience to office-goers and daily commuters. Many passengers reported extended waiting times, especially at Ghatkopar station, where crowding increased during the morning rush.Commuters also raised concerns about the lack of timely communication from the metro administration. According to several passengers, no official update was issued until around 10 am, even though delays were being reported from as early as 8 am.
Maintenance Work Cited As Cause Of Delay
In a later clarification, the operator said the restrictions were introduced after rail grinding work carried out overnight in coordination with the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited to improve track quality and ensure smoother rides. The maintenance activity was described as part of a planned safety and performance upgrade for better long-term service reliability. “As a standard safety precaution protocol, temporary speed restrictions are in place, which caused minor delays. We appreciate your support and understanding,” the operator added.
While services gradually stabilised through the morning, passengers continued to demand better real-time updates and advance alerts during such disruptions to avoid confusion and overcrowding in the future.
