Pune weather news: A revival of the monsoon is expected after August 14, following a brief period of reduced rainfall. According to officials from the India
Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure area is anticipated to form over the northwest and west-central Bay of Bengal around August 13. This development is expected to trigger renewed monsoon activity across various regions of India. According to a TOI report, weather experts note that the formation of the low-pressure system will strengthen winds, which is essential for the monsoon's revival. The current position of the monsoon trough, situated north of its normal location, is expected to shift southward. This shift is crucial as it will facilitate moisture-laden winds to penetrate deeper inland, enhancing rainfall across several states. GP Sharma, president of Skymet, elaborated on the expected impact: "The low-pressure formation will increase weather activity over West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, and eastern Uttar Pradesh. As this system interacts with the existing monsoon trough, we can expect an expansion of rainfall activity, strengthening significantly over Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Konkan and Goa. Enhanced rainfall may also reach parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat during the third week of August."
Current Weather Trends in Pune
Despite the anticipation of revival, rainfall has been slightly above normal for this season, primarily due to the recent monsoon break affecting large areas until mid-August. Sharma mentioned, "Rainfall will remain subdued over the next few days until mid-August, after which we expect the monsoon activity to intensify again. This pattern is characteristic of the current monsoon season."
An IMD official added, "The monsoon revival is likely after August 13-14 due to the formation of the low-pressure system. The shift of the monsoon trough to the south will allow the core monsoon zone, which includes parts of central India, to receive optimal rainfall. We expect enhanced rainfall across regions along the trough, including Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra."
As weather prediction models tend to lose accuracy beyond a five-day lead time, the situation will be closely monitored. The IMD will reassess forecasts early next week to ensure accurate updates on the evolving weather patterns. The monsoon's departure for this season currently stands at just 1% above normal, primarily due to the observed break period in August.
Residents of Pune and surrounding areas are advised to stay updated on weather forecasts as the monsoon conditions are expected to improve significantly after mid-August.
