It was not so long ago that many Indian families used to pressure their kids into choosing the field of engineering, with the belief that the profession
led to better job opportunities. Cut to 2026– and the reality had seemingly changed rather drastically- or so can be said based on a Reddit post of a software engineer! Taking to social media, the software engineer shared a ‘warning’ for young students pursuing or thinking of pursuing the same field: “Do not become a software engineer.” “Do not become a software engineer, please!” the post read. Explaining his warning, the man cited an example of his friend, who is about to get laid off. He further stated that most companies treat “software engineers like Dihadi Majdoors”. “My very close friend is about to get laid off , he worked day and night, and now this saying company needs to be changed! Companies are treating Software Engineering like ‘dihadi majdoors’. And now there is almost no engineering in software engineering , we are mostly orchestrators prompting clankers!” the post continued. Talking about the “less demand for engineers in the market”, he claimed that one needs to be “lucky” to get a good “tier 1-2-3” job. “There is really less demand for engineers in the market, don't go into this tier 1-2-3 thing , demand is very low, you will have to be very lucky to get into any company in this rat race. With these many candidates, think logically , does your DSA or skill matter or luck?” the post further read. The Redditor then revealed that he graduated in 2023 and earns over “35 lakh” as a techie; however, he often spends his time worrying about getting laid off. “I am saying this as someone who graduated in 2023. working in tech, earning 35+ L at big tech. And every week I think I could be laid off anytime I slow down. Market is dogs**t. My dear juniors, dont f**k with your career and become Software engg, we will have to look for some other stream for career like doctor, law etc,” the post concluded. The post immediately went viral, pulling many reactions. Most agreed with the man, while some blamed it on "unemployment and overpopulation” in India.
