30 trains to shift from New Delhi Station

• NDLS redevelopment to shift many trains to other stations.

Passengers travelling through New Delhi Railway Station may soon need to check their boarding stations carefully as Indian Railways prepares a large-scale

train shifting exercise linked to the station’s mega redevelopment project. The redevelopment work, expected to continue till around 2030, aims to develop NDLS into an airport-style multi-modal transport hub with higher passenger capacity, underground subways, expanded parking and modern waiting areas. To reduce crowding and inconvenience during construction, several trains are likely to be shifted to stations including Anand Vihar Terminal, Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station, Shakur Basti Railway Station, and Delhi Safdarjung Railway Station. Railway officials are also considering shifting more east-bound trains towards Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand to Anand Vihar Terminal. The Shatabdi services are expected to be among the most prominent trains moved during the exercise.

Three-Phase Redevelopment Plan At NDLS

The redevelopment work has already started near Platform Number 1 at New Delhi Railway Station. The modernisation project is expected to take three to four years and will be completed in phases:

Once completed, NDLS will be upgraded into a world-class transport hub with passenger handling capacity increasing from 4.5 lakh to nearly 7 lakh commuters daily. Parking capacity will also increase significantly, while underground passenger movement corridors, retail spaces and larger waiting halls are planned as part of the project.
