Delhi got brief relief from severe pollution on Wednesday evening as GRAP-4 curbs were revoked after the AQI improved to the ‘poor’ category at 270. To
combat hazardous winter pollution in Delhi-NCR, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) had implemented Stage IV of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) on December 13.
How GRAP is implemented?
GRAP is enforced in four escalating stages to curb rising air pollution. Stage 1 kicks in when the AQI breaches 200, followed by Stage 2 at 300, Stage 3 at 400 and the strictest, Stage 4, when levels cross 450. As an additional provision under Stage 4, CAQM advises states to consider shutting educational institutions and non-essential commercial activities, and to explore odd-even vehicle restrictions based on registration numbers — measures that have not been implemented so far.
