The Income Tax Department has rolled out the Excel utility for ITR-7 for Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27, allowing eligible entities to prepare their income
tax returns offline before uploading them to the e-Filing portal. The latest release adds another return form to the list of utilities already made available this filing season, helping taxpayers complete their compliance well ahead of the prescribed deadlines. The announcement was made through the department's official handle on X. With the Excel utility now available, eligible organisations can download the file, fill in return details without an internet connection, validate the information, generate a JSON file, and upload it to the Income Tax e-Filing portal for final submission. Who Is Eligible To File ITR-7? The ITR-7 return form is designed for specific categories of taxpayers and does not apply to salaried individuals. It is meant for persons, including companies, that are required to furnish returns under Sections 139(4A), 139(4B), 139(4C) and 139(4D) of the Income-tax Act. The form is commonly used by charitable and religious trusts, political parties, universities, colleges, scientific research institutions and certain educational organisations that fall under these provisions. According to ClearTax, firms, companies, associations of persons (AOPs), local authorities and artificial juridical persons covered under the relevant sections may also be required to file ITR-7, depending on their eligibility. The Income Tax Department has also clarified that from AY 2022-23 onwards, entities enjoying unconditional exemption under Section 10 and not otherwise required to file returns under Section 139 are no longer eligible to use ITR-7. How Does The Offline Excel Utility Work? The offline utility allows taxpayers to prepare their returns at their convenience without maintaining an active internet connection during data entry. After downloading the Excel utility from the Income Tax e-Filing portal, users can enter the required details across different schedules, validate the information and generate a JSON file. This file can then be uploaded online to complete the return filing process electronically. The offline mode is particularly useful for organisations handling extensive financial information, as it enables them to prepare and verify data before submission. Filing Deadlines And Other ITR Utilities The launch of the ITR-7 Excel utility follows the recent release of the ITR-5 offline utility. With this update, most major return forms, including ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-3, ITR-4 and ITR-5, are now available either through online filing, Excel utilities or both, allowing different categories of taxpayers to begin filing their income tax returns. The deadline for submitting ITR-7 depends on the nature of the entity. Organisations that are not required to undergo an audit generally have until August 31, 2026, to file their returns. Taxpayers whose accounts are subject to audit can file up to October 31, 2026, while entities required to furnish transfer pricing reports have time until November 30, 2026.
