In a major development, the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) is going to set up its Research and Development campus in the Anakapalli district of Andhra
Pradesh. This expansion project is being undertaken to enhance BARC's nuclear research capabilities and serve the nation's needs in the energy and defense sectors. The State Government has already acquired more than 1,200 hectares of revenue land for the project. BARC has now applied for approval to divert 148.15 hectares of forest land contiguous to the acquired land, lying between the project site and the sea. The proposed land diversion is considered important due to the strategic location of the facility. The Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change reviewed the proposal during the first week of this month and recommended in-principle approval for the diversion of forest land. The EAC noted that the sites were chosen based on recommendations from the Site Selection Committee, followed by approval from the Atomic Energy Commission. The expansion project will involve infrastructure such as a perimeter wall, security fence, patrolling road, and watchtowers. Proposed works on the site also include service lines, drains, and area development. While a total of 1,722 trees will be felled for the project, the EAC confirmed that trees near the sea will be preserved to protect the local ecosystems. The project is expected to contribute to India's nuclear research in strategic areas such as energy security, healthcare, agriculture, and water resources. According to a senior official from the Andhra Pradesh Forest Department, “The request from BARC for the allotment of land underwent detailed scrutiny before approval was granted.” The EAC has also made it clear that no future change in land use will be allowed for non-site-specific activities. This expansion further strengthens BARC's role in supporting research and development of new technologies in line with national priorities for defense and energy security.
