KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — A missile and drone assault on the Kyiv region overnight resulted in at least four deaths and injured at least 15 individuals, as reported
by Mykola Kalashnyk, head of the regional administration for the Ukrainian capital. Among the injured, three individuals are in critical condition, with two undergoing surgical procedures. The attack affected four districts, causing damage to residential buildings, educational institutions, enterprises, and critical infrastructure, Kalashnyk noted in a social media update.
Details of the Attack
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy indicated that the primary target of the strikes was the energy infrastructure of the Kyiv region. He disclosed that Russia launched approximately 430 drones and 68 missiles during the night. In response, Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed that the strikes were aimed at energy and industrial facilities supporting Ukraine's armed forces, as well as military airfields.
Stalled Peace Talks
The missile strikes occurred shortly after the United States postponed peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, initially scheduled for the current week, citing ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.As tensions escalate, Zelenskyy urged Kyiv's Western allies to focus on enhancing the production of air defense missiles to counter potential threats. He emphasized the need for a robust response to the war in the Middle East, which he believes Russia might exploit to intensify its actions in Ukraine.
Ukrainian Counteractions
In retaliation, Ukrainian drones reportedly targeted an oil refinery and a port in Russia’s Krasnodar region. Local officials reported injuries from a strike on Port Kavkaz, which is utilized for shipping liquefied natural gas and grains. A service vessel and pier infrastructure sustained damage as a result of the attack.Additionally, falling drone debris ignited a fire at the Afipsky oil refinery, though no injuries were reported. Russian authorities have yet to provide a detailed assessment of the damage.
