Kolkata is set to take a big step forward in urban transport with the launch of new metro routes spanning 13.61 km. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag
off the services during his visit, giving a major boost to the city’s connectivity. The new routes include the Noapara–Jai Hind Bimanbandar (Airport) corridor, the Sealdah–Esplanade section, and the Beleghata–Hemanta Mukhopadhyay line. The inauguration will also see the opening of a newly built subway at Howrah Metro Station. Among the new services, the Noapara–Jai Hind Bimanbandar line will make airport access faster and more convenient for passengers. The Sealdah–Esplanade section is expected to cut travel time dramatically — from about 40 minutes to just 11 minutes. The Beleghata–Hemanta Mukhopadhyay stretch will enhance connectivity to Kolkata’s IT hub, offering smoother and quicker commutes. Officials said these new routes will link some of the busiest parts of the city and strengthen multi-modal transport options. With lakhs of people using the metro every day, the expansion is likely to ease traffic pressure, reduce travel time and improve daily travel experiences across Kolkata.
