What is the story about?
Due to a cold wave across the city and adjoining areas, all schools in Ranchi will remain closed till December 31, 2025. The order is applicable for students
from kindergarten to class 12 in all government and private schools in Ranchi district. The schools will remain closed for 5 days (December 27 and December 31). An order issued by the district education office reads, "Under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Samhita, all government, non-government, and private schools operating within Ranchi district are directed to suspend classes from KG to class 12 from December 27 to December 31, 2025."
Ranchi weather update
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted severe cold and cold wave conditions in Jharkhand until further notice. The alert reads, "It is to be noted that Ranchi district has been categorised in the yellow zone, indicating a high probability of severe cold and cold wave conditions." Meanwhile, Ranchi recorded a minimum temperature of 7 degrees Celsius on Friday, and the mercury is expected to drop further, according to a weather official.Ranchi District Education Officer Vinay Kumar said that despite most schools declaring winter vacations, a few institutions are still holding classes.

Winter Vacation in Ranchi
Schools in Jharkhand, including Ranchi, are observing winter vacations as temperatures continue to drop across the state. As per the state education department’s holiday calendar, schools are closed for winter vacation from December 26 to December 31 in most government and aided schools. Classes are scheduled to resume in early January 2026. However, if the cold continues, the authorities may decide to extend the winter holidays to ensure students’ safety.
