Ahmedabad schools and colleges will remain closed on Friday, July 31, 2026, after authorities declared a holiday in view of the Red Alert issued for extremely
heavy rainfall in the city. The announcement was made by the office of the District Education Officer (DEO) following directions from the District Collector. The closure applies to all government schools, grant-in-aid and private educational institutions, including primary, secondary and higher secondary schools, as well as colleges across Ahmedabad city. Officials said the decision has been taken as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and staff amid forecasts of intense rainfall over the coming days. Educational institutions have been asked to immediately communicate the closure to teachers, students and parents through WhatsApp, SMS, phone calls or other available channels. Authorities have also clarified that any further decisions regarding school and college operations will depend on weather conditions and subsequent official orders issued by the administration. IMD Forecasts Extremely Heavy Rainfall Across Gujarat The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for Ahmedabad and several districts of Gujarat, warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over the next four days. According to the latest forecast, Ahmedabad may receive up to eight inches of rainfall on Friday, while Narmada district could receive as much as 12 inches. The weather department has issued a special warning for extremely heavy rainfall in vulnerable regions. The IMD has attributed the expected weather conditions to the combined influence of multiple meteorological systems, including a deep depression, an active monsoon trough, a shear zone, a western disturbance and an offshore trough. These systems are likely to trigger widespread and intense rainfall across the state. Fishermen have also been advised not to venture into the sea for the next two days due to rough weather conditions. The districts currently under Red Alert include Ahmedabad, Botad, Jamnagar, Anand, Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Bharuch, Narmada, Surat, Tapi, Dang, Navsari, Valsad, Daman, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Meanwhile, Surendranagar, Rajkot, Amreli, Gandhinagar, Kheda, Panchmahal and Dahod are under an Orange Alert, with heavy to very heavy rainfall expected. The IMD has further issued a Red Alert for August 1 for Ahmedabad, Surendranagar, Rajkot and Anand, indicating that extremely heavy rainfall is likely to continue in parts of Gujarat over the weekend.
