What is the story about?
The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has urged supporters to visit Connaught Place in Delhi, unfurl the national flag, take photographs with it and leave, asserting
that "waving the Tiranga is not a crime". The party shared the three-point appeal on social media as part of its 'Lehara Do Tiranga' call. In its appeal, CJP asked people to visit Connaught Place in groups of fewer than five, unfurl the Tricolour and click a photograph with the national flag before leaving the area. It also urged supporters to use the hashtag #LeharaDoTiranga.
The appeal comes amid heightened security in Connaught Place ahead of the proposed protest. The Delhi Police have not granted permission for the march, citing prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which bar mass gatherings in Connaught Place and adjoining areas. However, they had offered to facilitate a select group of protesters to wave the national flag at an alternative location. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has also announced that Central Park will remain closed to the public on Friday and Saturday for administrative reasons.
Earlier today, Delhi police personnel turned up at the residence of Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke and served him a notice prohibiting him from holding a protest at Connaught Place. The official cited the risk of traffic disruption, stampede and threats to public safety.
According to PTI, the notice described Connaught Place as a busy commercial hub comprising concentric circles connected by radial roads, with limited entry and exit points. It said that any gathering in one circle could quickly obstruct the others, making dispersal and emergency evacuation difficult. Any build-up could pose a serious risk of congestion and stampede, and the narrow service lanes could limit the movement of fire tenders and ambulances, it said.
The police have deployed more than 6,000 personnel and 220 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), each comprising 100 personnel, in the New Delhi area to prevent any law and order situation.
