What is the story about?
A telescope located in Chile has unveiled the intricate beauty of star-forming gases at the center of the Milky Way galaxy, showcasing unprecedented detail.
The European Southern Observatory released this stunning image on Wednesday, focusing on a region of cold cosmic gases that spans over 650 light-years, where a light-year equals nearly 6 trillion miles (9.7 trillion kilometers).
Significance of the Discovery
The captured clouds of gas and dust encircle the supermassive black hole located at the galaxy's center. This image marks the largest ever produced by the ALMA antenna network situated in the Atacama Desert, known as one of the driest regions on Earth.Astronomers can gain insights into the birth of stars in this area, termed the Central Molecular Zone, which is crucial for understanding the evolution of galaxies. Steve Longmore, the survey leader from Liverpool John Moores University, emphasized the importance of this research.
